If you can't login to linux box via root user and getting the message can't log in as a root , there might few reasons like : Password you are entring is incorrect and there might be chance that pam file "/etc/pam.d/login" has been updated with wrong entries. So to resolve this problem we can regenerate pam files or just restore the pam files from the backup.
