I was unable to login to the server with my root password.
I got access to the server via kvm and on checking the message logs I got the following error

error: Could not get shadow information for root”
Reason :
usepam option was disabled in sshd configuration
fix : open /etc/ssh/sshd_config
change usepam no to usepam yes
restart sshd
